UHSAA Executive Committee Approves the “Modified Stableford” Scoring System and Strongly Encourages it to be Used at the Region Level
The first year of UHSAA Girls Golf Program was a resounding success. We are very pleased with the Utah Section as a whole for the efforts the Board and Members made to make it such a success. As planned there were several issues that needed to be formalized as the program matured. Based on input from coaches, administrators, and volunteers with the girls program last year the Section made the following proposal to the Utah High School Activities Association which was approved by their Executive Committee:
On March 11, 2009 the UHSAA adopted the “Modified Stableford” System of golf scoring for the Girls’ High School Golf State Championship play in 2009. They have also suggested strongly that it be used on the region level as well. This scoring format lends itself more to both the goals and practical operation of girl’s golf events.

􀂃 Every region and the state championships were forced to use an untraditional scoring system in the first year of the program because of the level of competition in the fledgling girls program. This modification was most often the “pick‐up after reaching 10 stroke rule. Some regions asked players to pick up after 7 strokes and move to a designated spot near the green and continue play. Some regions may have used a different format for JV players and varsity players. So the precedent has already been set for a modified scoring format.

􀂃 The above described scoring format is directly contrary and illegal to use under the “Rules of Golf” scoring formats and additionally conflicts with several individual golf rules. The proposed “Modified Stableford” scoring system is not only approved for use by the USGA but has specific rules outlined in the “Rules of Golf”.

􀂃 The modified point format for the girls golf program is:

o A score higher than quadruple‐bogie (5 over par) on a hole would gain‐ 0 points.

o A score of quadruple‐bogie (4 over par) on a hole would gain‐ 1 point.

o A score of Triple‐bogie (3 over par) on a hole would gain‐ 2 points.

o A score of Double‐bogie (2 over par) on a hole would gain‐ 3 points.

o A score of Bogie (1 over par) on a hole would gain‐ 4 points.

o A score of Par (even par) on a hole would gain‐ 5 points.

o A score of Birdie (one under par) on a hole would gain‐ 6 points.

o A score of Eagle (two under par) on a hole would gain‐ 7 points.

o A score of Double Eagle (three under par) on a hole would gain‐ 8 points.

o The individual with the number of points would win the individual medal.

o The team with the highest number of the combined three lowest player’s scores would win the team event.

􀂃 The “Modified Stableford” system is less arbitrary and allows for some individual choice regarding on when to pick‐up and more accurately reflects overall ability of the players and teams. It better reflects how many bad holes are too many without voiding the final results as a whole.

􀂃 It is a more positive format for beginning players because it emphasizes the good scores and de‐emphasizes the bad scores. This is why it is used in several girls’ golf programs around the country. Golf is a difficult game to master but is exceptionally captivating once basic proficiencies are gained.

The Utah Section is proud to be involved with not only the development but the continued growth of the Girls’ High School Golf Program. We encourage out PGA Professionals to get involved with your local girls’ high school golf team. Teach them about the game and at this time especially about the Stableford scoring method.
We look forward to yet another successful year!
